Women in Development and Peace – Hebah Mohammed

In our current era, businesses are undergoing a revolutionary transformation in the field of technology. In this context, the role of women stands out as a driving force for change and innovation. Businesswomen express pride and confidence in their exceptional abilities to utilize technology for commercial success. They recognize the importance of investing in digital strength and applying it across all aspects of their work.

When it comes to technology, women entrepreneurs lead with creativity and inspiration. Their visionary approach is evident in their use of digital tools and platforms to achieve innovation and sustainable development. They understand that technology represents a genuine opportunity to expand their business scope, reach a broader audience, and achieve success beyond geographical and traditional boundaries.

Businesswomen and the Importance of the Technological Field

In recent years, Yemen has witnessed the emergence of an ambitious and creative new generation of businesswomen who take the initiative and achieve remarkable accomplishments across various fields. Among the key factors contributing to this notable growth is the pivotal role of technology.

Businesswoman Sabah Bakir emphasizes, “Understanding the importance of technology for Yemeni businesswomen is crucial for their success in a competitive business world. Technology is no longer just an additional tool; it has become the cornerstone that supports all aspects of their work, from innovation to marketing, communication, and operations.”

She adds, “The technology field serves as a vital conduit for women entrepreneurs to connect with the entire world, whether at the local or international level. Thanks to technological advancements, it is now possible to keep pace with global developments and communicate across borders, creating immense opportunities for achieving success and expanding business horizons.”

In the modern era of technology, businesswomen have access to a vast world of information and opportunities. They utilize modern communication and media channels to effectively connect with potential clients and partners. Leveraging these technologies, they can market their products and services efficiently. Additionally, technology enables them to conduct research, perform market studies, and analyze data, aiding in informed strategic decision-making.

Successful examples of Yemeni businesswomen leveraging communication and technology to expand into new markets abound. Among these examples are women entrepreneurs who export traditional products like incense, perfumes, henna, and honey to Gulf countries. Thanks to technology, they can market these products online and build networks of clients and business partners in the region.

Businesswoman Meena Salim emphasizes the pivotal role of the technology and information sector in achieving economic success and business development for women. Technology serves as a powerful tool for accessing information, facilitating communication, and overcoming challenges. In this context, it plays a crucial role in bridging the gender gap.

Salim adds, “The technology field and information services contribute significantly to enhancing the economic success of businesswomen. It creates new employment opportunities, especially in areas such as software development, website design, and digital marketing. Furthermore, it increases the income of businesswomen and improves their quality of life.”

She also highlights that technology empowers businesswomen to efficiently manage their companies, accelerate goal achievement, and reduce gender disparities.

Available Opportunities

Bakir points out the available opportunities in the technology field, stating: “Yemeni businesswomen can leverage e-commerce by creating online stores to showcase their products and facilitate online buying and selling. They can also use smart applications and social media platforms to promote their services and build business relationships with clients.”

She adds, “Among the opportunities is social media marketing, as well as learning from successful external experiences. UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services) aims to enhance women’s capabilities in handling technology. They provide training on how to participate in tenders through the United Nations Global Marketplace (UNGM), both at the local and global levels.”

Bakir also emphasizes that for effective service marketing that attracts clients, having an interconnected website with all social media channels is essential. The website should be professionally designed, visually appealing, and contain comprehensive and detailed information about the services offered. The user interface should be user-friendly and compatible with all devices.

To develop women entrepreneurs’ skills in technology and information, Bakir recommends specific steps, including joining specialized vocational institutes in digital marketing. These institutes offer training courses and educational programs that help acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for using technology in marketing.

She continues, “Women entrepreneurs can invest in available opportunities through donors interested in supporting education and digital skills. Numerous grants and programs can be utilized for training and development in the technology and information field. Businesswomen should be aware of the available opportunities and the financial and educational resources they can access.”

Low Participation Rates

Regarding the participation of Yemeni women in the technology field, businesswoman Meena Salim states: “The percentage of Yemeni women working in technology is extremely low. This can be attributed to several factors, including societal culture, lack of education and training, discrimination against women, stereotypical views of women, and challenges related to accessing employment opportunities due to insecurity.”

Efforts are being made to increase the participation of Yemeni women in technology, both at the individual level and through support from organizations and entities that assist women entrepreneurs. Many organizations provide training programs and support services specifically for Yemeni businesswomen in this field.

Women’s Experiences

Businesswoman Sama Al-Isayi shares her experience with a project she initiated through social media: “My project revolves around selling Avon’s global products, which include medical skincare, hair care, medical cosmetics, and perfumes. I relied on social media for promotion and sales from the beginning of my project.”

Using technology in her work has several benefits, including widespread recognition and customer attraction. Initially, she faced limitations in sales because customers preferred to see and choose products themselves, such as selecting fragrance scents or foundation shades.

To address this, she opened a small store to facilitate communication with customers and receive their orders, building trust between her and the clients. Having an online commerce presence enhances trust, as online purchases can sometimes raise doubts for customers. However, having a physical store where customers can visit and interact directly instills complete confidence.

She emphasizes that continuous self-improvement, staying updated on technology, following marketing trends, and enhancing customer interaction methods are crucial for the success of women entrepreneurs. These efforts help overcome challenges related to resource availability and fluctuating currency rates.

Amani Numan, a filmmaker and animator, also shares her journey in the world of drawing and cartoons. She emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and skill development in technology for business success.

To achieve our ambitions, we decided to seek funding from Al-Itihad Microfinance Program. This was the first step in our professional journey. We participated in Abwab Short Film Festival, securing the eighth position. In 2022, we entered Samira Animation Competition and clinched third place. In 2024, we participated again and secured the top spot.

We faced challenges related to electricity outages in Aden. Consequently, we produced a short series titled “No Entry,” which tells the story of a nuclear-powered electricity generator providing power in Aden. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to working on my films, and animations, and continuously enhancing my skills. Through my artistic work on social media, I strive to convey positive messages and raise awareness. Art and animation have the power to effect change and inspire others. This is what I believe.

Entrepreneurship in the Middle East

In the Middle East, the remarkable presence of women as online business owners is evident. 35% of business owners in this sector are women, significantly surpassing the global average of 10%. Some Arab women have excelled in various technology-related fields, leading to a genuine transformation in this domain.

Among these inspirational women, Wafa Al-Ashwali stands out. She leveraged her personal resources to establish a company called “Service,” a multi-service platform offering services such as home appliance repair, garden cleaning, private tutoring, and translation.

From the UAE to Oman, Egypt, and Jordan, influential women entrepreneurs in the Middle East and North Africa break stereotypes and excel. One such inspiring figure is May Midhat, the founder, co-chair, and CEO of “Eventtus”. She shared the spotlight with the U.S. President, the CEO of Facebook, and prominent business leaders at the GES 2016 event in Silicon Valley.

The Steps

Regarding the steps that businesswomen should take to enhance their skills in technology and information, businesswoman Meena Salim mentioned some of them. These steps include identifying the skills women want to develop and the skills needed for business growth or entry into a new field. These skills may encompass programming, website design, digital marketing, and data analysis.

She continues: “Learning basic skills, such as using computers, the internet, and email, will help effectively utilize technology in the workplace. Attending training courses in the field of technology and information is also essential. There are numerous online courses available, as well as classroom-based options.

As part of her recommendations, Meena Salim advises reading books and articles related to technology and information. This helps maintain the fundamental resources for any technology-dependent project. Additionally, staying informed about the latest trends in technology is crucial, as the field evolves rapidly. Therefore, continuous learning and dedicating time to acquire new skills and enhance existing ones are essential.”
